Driving Without a Valid License: Penalties and Fines to Keep in Mind!
Houston is a great place to live in, largely due to its cosmopolitan vibe. It’s also surrounded by great places to visit. So it’s a great idea to start off 2020 with a weekend road trip with your family or friends.
Perhaps head out to Denton to enjoy a family weekend? Orplan a ride to El Paso with your friends to enjoy the magnificent desert landscape?
If you’ve got a family member or friend who can drive, that’s great! Lay back with your sunglasses on and enjoy the ride!
But, if you’re planning to drive yourself, make sure you've got a valid driving license.
Otherwise, you might find yourself in big trouble. Let’s take a look at the penalties and fines pertaining to driving without a valid license:
Driving without a valid license: penalties and fines
Driving without a valid license can fall into a few permutations. Generally, it can be divided into three categories:
· Driving without a valid license
· Driving without a physical copy of your license
· Driving while your license is revoked or suspended
Driving without a valid license
If you’ve yet to get your driving license and you plan to get behind the wheels, you’re signing up for trouble.
The first offense will cost you a$200 fine. Repeat the violation within a year, and you can prepare to pay a fine of $25 to $200.
If you believe the“third time’s a charm,” and hit the road without a license, you can face a $25 to $200 fine and/or 72 hours to six months in jail.
Driving without a physical copy of your license
If you’ve got a valid driving license but don’t have it in possession when you’re stopped by a police officer, you can breathe a sigh of relief.
You can avoid a conviction by simply presenting proof of a valid driving license to the court and paying a mere $10 dismissal fine.
That being said, it’s important to carry your valid legal driving license whenever you’re behind the wheel to avoid legal trouble and unnecessary hassle.
Driving while your license is revoked or suspended
Now, this is dangerous territory. If your driving license is revoked or suspended, brace yourself to deal with everything from fines and jail time to the extension of the license suspension period.
Driving while your license is revoked or suspended will cost you a $500 fine (Class C misdemeanor).
If you repeat the mistake or don’t have proof of insurance, it counts as a class B misdemeanor that comes with a $2,000 fine and up to 180 days of jail time.
If you don’t have insurance and cause an accident, you will be convicted with a class A misdemeanor, resulting in a$4,000 fine and jail time of up to one year.
